The English Book Club: Jonathan Escoffery – If I Survive You

The novel describes a Jamaican family who have fled their homeland to find a new life in Miami. Each of the chapters is written from the perspective of one of the family members, focusing primarily on the younger of the two siblings, Trelawny, who was – unlike his older brother, Delano – born in the USA. Growing up, Trelawny comes across various difficulties and increasingly feels that he does not fit into the community or certain social groups, including his own family, and suffers an identity crisis while trying to figure out where he belongs. But it is not only Trelawny, the other members of the family also have their own struggles and battles in the unwelcoming environment.
