The English Book Club – My Sister, the Serial Killer
In October we shall discuss the debut novel by Oyinkan Braithwaite titled My Sister, the Serial Killer.
It is a blackly comic novel about two sisters, one of whom is a serial killer, the other the resentful, yearning enabler. It shows how blood is thicker – and more difficult to get out of the carpet – than water. Ayoola has already killed three of her boyfriends and her sister Korede helped her clean the mess every time because she loves her sister and because family comes first. Until, that is, Ayoola starts dating the doctor where Korede works as a nurse. Korede’s long been in love with him, and isn’t prepared to see him wind up with a knife in his back: but to save one would mean sacrificing the other…
The group is open to anyone and meets on a monthly basis, last Friday of the month. This time it is the penultimate Friday because of the holidays. The discussions are intended as presentations of literary works and as language practice, as they take place exclusively in English. The club meeting will be moderated by one of its members.
