Mobile Library Festival and International Specialist Conference

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Mobile library of the Ljubljana City Library, in cooperation with the Mobile Library Section of the Slovenian Library Association, we are organizing a Festival and International Conference on Mobile Libraries. On May 16th, 2024, from 10 am to 5 pm, 18 fully equipped mobile library vehicles from Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Bulgaria will be on display at the Congress Square and Vegova street in Ljubljana. The opening ceremony and a short cultural programme will take place at 10:00 on the site. Buses, trucks and vans converted into mobile libraries will be on display until 17:00 on Vegova street.

The 22nd International Specialist Conference on Mobile Libraries will be held at the LCL Oton Župančič Library. Its aim is to exchange information and experience and discuss the importance of mobile libraries in modern society, along with possibilities for their further development.

The two-day conference on May 16th and 17th will bring together specialists from Slovenia, UK, Hungary, Portugal, Sweden, Croatia, Serbia, the Netherlands, Spain, North Macedonia, Lithuania and Bulgaria. They will present interesting projects for mobile library users in their own library space, the development and organization of their networks of mobile library stops and working practices that differ from those of librarians in regular libraries. Festivals of mobile libraries abroad will be presented, as well as the experience of the first Slovenian meeting of bibliobuses 30 years ago.

The first Ljubljana Mobile Library set off on October 15th, 1974, since then, five vehicles have been replaced, thousands of kilometres have been travelled, millions of books have been borrowed, and many invaluable bonds have been forged by mobile librarians. The LCL Mobile Library currently visits 47 stops in the Municipality of Ljubljana and suburban areas, and is on the road every working day, usually in the afternoon and evening. Its stops are in towns and villages without nearby stationary libraries, as well as in various institutions for vulnerable members of our society.

In cooperation with AS Domžale and the Slovenian Library Association.
